August 2 - Science Museum and Meinong Hakka
I got up today and made it to breakfast in the hotel, and then we took the bus to the National Science and Technology Museum. It was bigger than I thought it would be, and it had quite the array of topics. My favorite was the space one because they had actual rocket parts. One of the rockets said TASA, which is probably Taiwan’s NASA equivalent. A lot of the exhibits were more thought out with advanced technology. One of them was about cars, car parts, and car-making. I saw some robot arms used to build cars. After the museum, we were gifted a group lunch at Din Tai Fung, which is a restaurant chain based out of Taiwan. They are most known for their xiaolongbao (soup dumplings), and we watched workers make them while we waited. Of course, we ate xiaolongbao. But we also had shrimp dumplings, vegetable dumplings, spicy dumplings, shumai, vegetables, rice noodles, hot and sour soup, flavored cucumber, pork fried rice, and finally chocolate xiaolongbao for dessert. My half of the table didn’t quite finish all of our food, so I ate the rest to avoid food waste. Everything was so delicious. The restaurant was inside a mall, so they gave us an hour to go shopping before we left to Meinong. I went straight to a Japanese cheesecake bakery and bought their chocolate cheesecake. Japanese cheesecakes are very different because they are fluffy and jiggly instead of dense and creamy. I finally got to taste one, and it was pretty good. We left the mall and went to Meinong to learn about the Hakka people in Taiwan. We first stopped at a Hakka shop where they were making and selling lots of things but most notably the Chinese-style bamboo umbrellas. Then, we went to the Meinong Hakka Culture Museum and learned about the history and culture of the Hakka people in Taiwan. After we got back to the hotel, I and 2 other guys went straight to a Chinese Professional Baseball League game. I had hotdogs there for dinner. It was so fun.
Academic Reflection:
At the science museum, I learned that Taiwan actually has a decent space program. I originally thought NASA was way bigger than all other countries’ space agencies. I also learned about the manufacturing and technology in Taiwan. They had car and motorcycle parts and showed how they move. Taiwan is a leader in computer chip manufacturing, which is used in cars. I also saw an exhibit about natural disasters and earth science in Taiwan as well as one on the textile and clothing industry science in Taiwan. The natural disaster one had an earthquake simulator and small-scale model of flooding and landslides. This taught me how important technological innovation is in Taiwan to protect from natural disasters.
On the way to Meinong, Peter told us about the traditional Chinese umbrellas. They are made of bamboo and have painted oily paper on top. We saw lots of them at the shop. In Meinong, we learned about the Hakka people, who are originally from China, but aren’t from a specific area in China called Hakka as Peter told us. The museum told us that they originated in the northern part of China, and then they immigrated to the southern part of China, then they settled in the mountainous part of Taiwan. Peter and the museum said that “Hakka” means guest. The Hakka people were guests of southern China and then of Taiwan. They are a subgroup of the Han Chinese ethnic group that immigrated to these places together and interacted with the locals to create their own Hakka culture.

As someone who used to not like noodles before, I can understand why some people wouldn’t like it. Coming from an authentic South Indian family, I was more accustomed to eating rice. Rice has always been the staple in our household, with its soft, fluffy texture and the rich curries that accompany it, making it a comfort food deeply tied to my upbringing.
I was introduced to noodles through Maggi and I wasn’t a huge fan of it. The texture of noodles felt unusual—soft yet slippery—and didn’t provide the same satisfaction that rice did. And the thought of those dry, frozen peas that often came with it? That was enough to make me not even want to think about eating noodles again. The peas especially felt out of place—tough, lacking in flavor, and not at all like the fresh vegetables I was used to in home-cooked meals.
My brother on the other hand was the complete opposite, he would absolutely die for Maggi so over time I started getting a habit of eating it once in a while.
Over time, my relationship with food in general has evolved. As I tried more variations of noodles and encountered different cuisines, I started to see them as more than just the bland instant versions I was introduced to. Dishes like pad-Thai, ramen, or even Indo-Chinese hakka noodles have broadened my appreciation for how versatile and flavorful noodles can be when prepared differently.
In some ways, it became a part of our shared sibling experiences—something we could both enjoy together, even if my initial distaste for it was strong. I still don’t have a strong love for noodles, but I’ve come to appreciate the convenience and occasional comfort they can offer. Even today, though, I remain more of a rice person at heart.

drywall
i've been back in the suburbs with my family. back to the place that I tried so hard to escape. but also back to a place of familiarity. mom's rice roti's on a Sunday morning, nani's mandazi's, vegetable shanghai noodles from the hakka place down the street and rubicon - every single flavour of rubicon.
i'm not sure if its feeling nostalgic or feeling lost. feeling further from where I want to be. who i want to be. just lots of feels. finally feeling the feels that downtown life numbs you of. the suburbs make you feel like picking cherries from the tree in your backyard and bringing them to your neighbour in a big ziplock bag. but the suburbs also feel lonely. the suburbs feel like a pan pizza from dominos in your bed watching reality tv on a friday night.
I think they use a different type of drywall in the suburbs.
there is a piece of drywall between us, a very thin piece of drywall. i hear everything and I know you hear me too. especially since you've punched a hole in the wall. why haven't you patched up the hole in the wall? you put up a dry erase board to cover the eye sore and I guess it's resolved. but sound still travels.
i miss you, I miss the suburbs. i miss when they made walls with fibreglass. I miss when there wasn't a piece of drywall between us.

大家好! The stall selling fish soup and porridge also sells zha jiang mian (noodles with pork and bean sauce) and I wanted to try it. ML, MI, SC and I returned to the stall and I ordered my fix. What can I say? Every version so far has been amazing. The savoury sauce coats every strand after tossing, the noodles are chewy, the pork is tasty and, for this version, the Chinese spinach adds texture. What I also like is the little bowl of peppery broth, which appears to be the same one served with their ban mian (board noodles). This meal was very delicious, it kept me so full, I couldn't stomach dinner and it cost $4. Can't wait to return and try their other menu items!
Back to sushi because why not. I decided on an all-salmon meal and grabbed a tray of nigiri sushi as well as a tray of sashimi. After paying, I sat down to eat. This is my favourite way of eating salmon, especially on a scorching hot afternoon. It's hard to pick which I prefer, but sashimi probably wins by a small margin. I may have a full sashimi lunch down the road after I've tried other meal options at this Japanese corner. They have unagi and cooked scallops with rice as well as yakitori and rice bentos which look very tempting.

ML, SC and I returned to the Hakka yong tau foo stall because we couldn't get enough of the delicious, perfectly-seasoned pork used to stuff vegetables as well as tofu items and fragrant chilli sauce. Customers can also choose curry gravy instead of clear broth, but we like the broth. Besides the curry gravy might mask the taste of the pork. This time, ML and I skipped the noodles and ordered the larger serving of 6 pieces (the regular with noodles comes with 4 pieces). I can't decide which I like better, both were so tasty. But I think I'll order meepok again the next time because it's hard to resist my favourite noodles.
I'm still doing the 250 calorie challenges out of compassion for Palestinians in Gaza. I just don't share them as often. This genocidal war is still ongoing and the official death toll inches closer to 40,000 by the day. Starvation is spreading in the war-torn strip and my heart goes out to the Palestinians who continue to suffer so much. I also no longer trust countries which proclaim themselves as the champions of human rights whilst supplying weapons to Israel. What is committed against Palestinians is barbaric, cruel, wicked and downright evil and they're indirectly facilitating it.
These countries are so shameless, I can't even. So yeah, there's nothing left to say because at this point, I'm wholly disgusted. We've reached an age of depravation when the brutal murder of another human being is somehow celebrated and justified. These are very dark times for mankind and it makes me wonder how the rules based order serves humanity when thousands of innocent lives are ended in such barbaric ways. Some countries just don't deserve to lead the world. 下次见!
